I'm heading out of town and may not have internet access. Thus, as an early Christmas present, I'm posting all of my remaining recs at once. Enjoy!

Title: Big Damn Zombies, Sir by shrift
Fandom: Firefly
Pairing: gen
Categories: humor, crack, favorite
Length: ~3,500 words
Warnings: n/a

Jayne gets turned into a zombie. Hilarity ensues.

Sometimes you just want something that makes you smile and nothing is quite as smile-inducing as Jayne lumbering about the ship, gnawing on people's heads and plaintively asking for brains. Characterization is spot-on all around and as a special treat, you get a little Zombie!Jayne ditty at the end. Enjoy!

Title: If You're Gone by sahiya
Fandom: White Collar
Pairing: Elizabeth/Neal/Peter
Categories: angst, hurt/comfort
Length: ~31,000 words
Warnings: n/a

When Elizabeth gets a great career opportunity in San Francisco, she and Peter leave. Meanwhile, Neal is reassigned to Diana.

This fic is chock full of the most lovely pining as Neal tries to cope with the departure of Elizabeth and Peter, while adapting to his new life with Diana as a handler. And while that pining is delightful to read, I have to admit what I love most about it is the friendship that develops between Neal and Diana. It's different than the one between him and Peter, but it's a great relationship and one that is a delight to read.

If you're a fan of Diana and/or of pining, this is the fic for you.

Title: The Team Player by Cori Lannam
Fandom: Sports Night
Pairing: Kim/Sheer Awesomeness (there's some secondary pairings, but they really don't matter)
Categories: humor
Length: ~3,500 words
Warnings: n/a

The epic tale of how Kim saved Sports Night single-handedly through her mad guerrilla PR skills.

I'll be honest: I don't even remember the actual canon!Kim from Sports Night. Maybe she was awesome, maybe she wasn't. However, fanfic!Kim is unequivocally badass and she's never more badass than she is in this fic, in which she pulls in every favor she has to save Sports Night from cancellation. Every time I read this story, I find myself grinning madly with vicarious glee. Go Sports Night!

Title: We could be a whole parade by belmanoir
Fandom: Due South
Pairing: Kowalski/Vecchio
Categories: pre-slash, friendship, post-canon
Length: ~8,000 words
Warnings: Fraser isn't portrayed in the best light (then again, it's pretty much the way he is in canon, so YMMV)

Ray comes back from Canada, licking his wounds, and runs into Frannie at a ballroom dancing class.

Despite the pairing, this fic is mostly about Ray K. and Frannie's growing friendship. I love these two so much together -- they're both a little broken and both often underestimated and they make a fantastic platonic couple. Mix in some closure on the whole Stella issues, as well as a lovely understated romance between the two Rays, and you have one of the best Due South fics I've read in years. Just lovely.

Title: Precession by Spatz
Fandom: Life
Pairing: Charlie Crews/Dani Reese (pre-het)
Categories: post-canon
Length: ~3,000 words
Warnings: I have no idea if this story is AU or not (Tidwell ruined the show for me and I never did make it to the end)

Charlie's on suspension and keeps calling Dani at work to bug her.

The dialogue in this story is amazing! Crews and Reese are such distinct and unique characters that it sometimes can be a challenge to write their dialogue in such a way that it rings true, but Spatz handles it brilliantly. It's been years since I've watched the show and I can still hear the characters' voices in my head when reading this story; that's a rare feat for me. A small but delicious treat for fans of Life.

Title: Copycat by IamShadow21
Fandom: White Collar
Pairing: Gen
Categories: kid!fic, AU, drama
Length: ~10,000 words (if you include footnotes)
Warnings: child in a crappy situation (pre-story)

An AU in which Neal is an autistic child forced to forge artwork, and Peter is the agent who finds (and rescues) him.

I debated this rec for a while, because the story overall feels very incomplete -- we never find out who took Neal, for example, and while the author really tries to put some foreshadowing of Neal's future in the story, Neal himself isn't fleshed out enough to really make it work (for example, there's no clear reason why Peter and/or Elizabeth would be part of Neal's future). Still, every time I've read this story I've enjoyed it, because the writing is phenomenal and the subject is interesting and, most of all, because the author clearly knows what she's writing about and I have a huge kink for authors who know their shit and express it well.

In short, if you're looking for a story in which Peter is Peter and Neal is a kid and together they build a family, well, this fic isn't for you. However, if you're in the mood for fantastic writing from someone who is clearly an expert in autisim, you definitely want to give this story a try.

(So this is kind of embarrassing: I managed to completely forget that Jane's Recs had a mirror at DW. *facepalm* On the plus side, this means two recs in a row!)

Title: If You Give a Reese a Reason by zihna
Fandom: Person of Interest
Pairing: Reese/Carter
Categories: fluff
Length: 1,100 words
Warnings: n/a

Five times Reese and Carter were domestic, in their own weird, screwed-up way.

This rec breaks nearly all of my rules of reccing: it's extremely short, it's a five-times story, and it's an insta-rec (which I try very hard to avoid, as I often find myself feeling reccer's remorse). But at the same time, it's Reese/Carter which is nearly non-existent (thus far! I have hopes for the future) and it's fluffy and wonderfully in character and I just love Reese and Carter so much in this fic that I'm having to physically restrain myself from squeeing.

If you're a fan of Person of Interest, I'd rec this fic, even if you don't ship these two. Except for the very last scene it could easily pass for friendship fic and it honestly is so very adorably snarky that it's impossible not to smile.

Title: Everything's Better with Bunnies by khilari and Persephone_Kore
Fandom: Thor
Pairing: gen
Categories: crack, humor, angst
Length: 12,700 words
Warnings: n/a

Authors' summary: "When frightened or stressed, Loki transforms into a bunny and sometimes he needs to be cuddled to calm down enough to turn back. Unfortunately, the events of the movie are extremely stressful."

I passed on reccing this the first time I read it, because... well, because it features a Loki who turns into a bunny. Besides, I figured that if the Thor fandom is churning out well-written and interesting Loki is a bunny fics, the non-cracky fics must be phenomenal.

Since then, however, I've found that well-written and interesting Thor fics are not quite as plentiful as I'd hoped and none of the fics I've read so far are anything near as entertaining and engaging as this story. Khilari and Persephone_Kore have done a brilliant job of taking a premise that should, by all accounts, be pure crack and giving it a gravitas and sincere realism that manages to surpass the movie. If anything, having Loki randomly turn into a rabbit gives him more reason for the actions of the movie, because unlike in the movie (where he doesn't find out about his origins until part of the way through), in this story he has a reason going in for feeling outcast and different.

I will say that this story does hinge a little too much on the movie's plot, but it makes up for it with its latter half which takes place after the end of the movie and which explores how Loki might've felt if he'd survived to face the consequences of what he'd done. Even better, nearly every single Asgard character makes an appearance so you get to see Loki truly owning up to his mistakes.

All in all, if you're looking for a serious, interesting, and entertaining Loki character study (and can either overlook the bunny thing or, even better, embrace it), this is the fic for you.

Title: Home Brew by grenegome
Fandom: Dresden Files
Pairing: Dresden/Marcone
Categories: fluff
Length: 3,000 words
Warnings: n/a

While on "vacation" (read: while Hendricks is on vacation), John heads over to Harry's house to kill some time. After some non-specified sexy shenanigans, the boys settle down to dabble in potion brewing. Fluff ensues.

Normally I don't rec fic this short, but I have a real soft spot for in-character Dresden Files stories, especially stories that do a good job of selling the Dresden/Marcone pairing. This author does a brilliant job with both the characters and the relationship, communicating all sorts of nuances in her dialogue, with banter and innuendo and humor (with a bonus cameo of Bob being awesome). Guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Title: Reversal of Fortune by shayheyred
Fandom: Gorgeous Carat
Pairing: Ray/Florian or gen, depending on how much weight you place on innuendo)
Categories: post-canon (I think), angst, drama
Length: ~2,900 words
Warnings: n/a

After Ray gets exposed as Noir, he is publicly lashed and left to live or die with nothing to his name. That's how Florian finds him.

I have to confess something: if this fic were in a large fandom, it probably wouldn't have gotten recced. Not because it isn't great (it is), but because it feels more like the first chapter of a wonderfully epic character study that I really wish had been written and which I really want to read.

That said, what better compliment can I pay to a story but that I wish it were a lot longer? Ray and Florian are beautifully in character, which is impressive considering how different their places in the world are from canon, and the writing and dialogue are both tone perfect and enjoyable to read. Good Gorgeous Carat fic is hard to find, and fic where Ray and Florian exchange the master/slave dynamic is nearly non-existent, which makes this a must-read for any fan of the fandom or of really well-written reversal of fortune fics. A fun, very enjoyable story.

Reversal of Fortune
Title: Everingham by Katharine T
Fandom: Mansfield Park
Pairing: Henry Crawford/Fanny Price (side pairing of Edmund Bertram/Mary Crawford)
Categories: AU, romance, drama, angst, favorite
Length: 46,500 words
Warnings: n/a

When Henry decides to skip the dinner party that, in canon, was the first step in the path that led to his elopement with Maria, it changes the entire course of his relationship with Fanny. An extremely clever what-if that takes a tiny decision on Henry's part and shows how it could have a far-reaching impact on the entire cast of Mansfield Park.

I have to be honest: for a long time, I really, really didn't like Henry Crawford, which meant this fic was a very tough sell. However, I'm one of those rare folks who doesn't care for canon pairings in Austen fanfic and this fic came highly recommended, so I decided to give it a shot.

Man am I glad I did. Everingham completely sold me on the pairing of Henry/Fanny (to the point that I don't really ship Edmund and Fanny anymore) and has become one of my absolute favorite and most reread fanfics of all time. Both Fanny and Henry grow enormously as people in this fic (far more so than they did in canon, in fact), resulting in a very slow-burn romance that somehow manages to take the antagonistic relationship Henry and Fanny shared in canon and realistically turn it into affection and romance. There are no shortcuts, either, and definitely no "hate turns into lust" moments. Every step of the romance is hard-earned and plausible, resulting in a very powerful story.

Of course, none of the above would be possible without superlative writing. Katharine does a brilliant job in that regard with the same light but formal language that Austen herself used and the same fluid POV (though, despite the summary, the story is most often told in Fanny's POV). Her dialogue is especially impressive; she has the same knack Austen did for taking formal language and occasional monologues and somehow making it sound like something people would naturally say. Mix in spot-on characterizations for absolutely everyone and a surprising (and, it must be said, brilliant) bit of character byplay in the final chapters of the fic and you have one of the best Jane Austen fanfics of all time. Very highly recommended.

Title: The Last Will and Testament of Lily Evans Potter by chrmisha
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: gen
Categories: drama, angst, hurt/comfort
Length: 40,000 words
Warnings: references to pre-story child abuse

When the Dursleys find Lily's will and learn that she named Snape as a guardian for Harry, they waste no time in dumping Harry at Snape's door.

Fair warning: this fic only covers about a week of time and thus, while it is complete and does have an ending, it doesn't really feel like a full story. A sequel is theoretically coming, but I have to admit that I'm not holding my breath.

That said: this is one of the most enjoyable, non-stressful Snape mentors/adopts Harry fic that I've ever read. Most of these stories start off with weeks or even months of Snape being a right bastard and Harry being a total brat, which is pretty IC canonically speaking, but which has very little to do with how people would behave in the real world. Chrmisha goes a different route, with Snape not being at all oblivious to Harry's condition and with Harry not being utterly blind to how much better Snape is as a guardian than the Dursleys. The end result is two people learning to trust one another in a reasonable, organic fashion, with hints of possible familial feelings at some point in time in the future but without any hint at insta!family. Mix in a healthy dose of hurt/comfort (focus on the comfort) and some extremely good writing and you have a fic that is perfect for anyone wanting a Snape-adopts-Harry story without having to tunnel through the mountain of heart-wrenching angst that usually accompanies the genre.

Title: The Substance of Things Hoped For by vega rin
Fandom: Haven
Pairing: gen
Categories: angst, hurt/comfort
Length: 7,500 words
Warnings: n/a

While chasing a Troubled serial killer, Nathan and Audrey end up stranded in the middle of the snowy woods on a very, very cold night.

There isn't much Haven fic out there, and the majority of what I have found has been very middling. Not so this fic, which is beautifully written, has tone-perfect Audrey and Nathan voices, and manages to incorporate an unusual and quite intriguing Trouble. There's also a stab at creating a mythology for the show's central mystery (namely: who, what, and why is Audrey Parker) that gives readers something to think about.

If you've found yourself stuck in the mire of mediocre Haven fic, give this fic a try. It's definitely the best of the fics I've read so far in the fandom.

Title: The Snow Queen by Doyle
Fandom: Angel (with Buffy universe cameos)
Pairing: gen, with flirting
Categories: action, casefile
Length: 13,500 words
Warnings: n/a

Set after Doyle dies and before Gunn joins the team as a regular member. When Angel and Wes are abducted at a simple rescue gone wrong, it's up to Cordelia (and her mad recruiting powers) to save the day.

As I'm not a huge fan of brooding vampires (be they of the Angel variety or the Spike variety), I don't read much Buffy 'verse fics. Fortunately, this fic features neither, as it's all about Cordelia and her delightfully practical approach to saving the day. Between her superpower (bitchiness), Gunn (even more awesome than in canon), and the Buffsters (elevating squabbling to an art form, heh) you have a fun, fast-paced fic that could (and absolutely should) have been an episode of the show.

Title: Head Wounds Are Only Part of the Package by everysecondtuesday
Fandom: Psych
Pairing: Shawn/Gus
Categories: drama, humor
Length: 11,000 words
Warnings: n/a

Gus gets a girlfriend. Shawn gets jealous.

It's been a while since I've read a Psych fic I really liked and even longer since I've read a Shawn/Gus fic, so I was thrilled to stumble on this gem. Tuesday does a brilliant job with both Gus and Shawn's characterizations and provides hilarious cameos from Henry and Juliet. Where this story really shines, however, is with Gus's girlfriend Kim, who I liked so much that I was prepared to be very indignant on her behalf during the inevitable breakup. Fortunately Tuesday handles the situation deftly and the result is a perfect Psych ending. Surprisingly sweet and lots of fun, this is a ideal choice for both established Gus/Shawn fans and for folks who are trying the pairing for the first time.

Title: The Day Is Saved by miss_pryss
Fandom: Die Hard 4 (Live Free or Die Hard)
Pairing: gen
Categories: humor, post-canon
Length: 2,760 words
Warnings: n/a

John, Lucy, and Matt keep trying to have a day off, but bad shit *just keeps happening*. And it is hysterical.

The vast majority of the DH4 fic I've read is John/Matt and kind of angsty, which is why this story is such a breath of fresh air. The various misadventures of the McClanes and Farrell are kind of ridiculous (but no more ridiculous than actual canon) and at the same time awesome, as all three of the people in question are more than equipped to kick ass. Even if that ass happens to belong to a rogue Santa. Funny and very fun.

Title: The Dresden Omens by shiplizard
Fandom: Good Omens/Dresden Files
Pairing: Harry/Marcone pre-slash
Categories: humor, hurt/comfort, crossover
Length: 17,900 words
Warnings: one random and rather frustrating POV shift

Apparently Harry Dresden has been designated Heaven's new champion and Hell has sent their most experienced Earth-bound demon to take care of him. Sucks to be Crowley.

Poor, poor Crowley. Seriously, I've rarely seen a character take as much of a beating in a funny fic as Crowley does in his quest to take down Harry Dresden. From the disastrous attempts to create havoc via Molly and Thomas to the epic direct attack on Harry himself, Crowley finds himself in a world of hurt and I spent much of this fic wanting to give him a hug. While laughing the whole time, because shiplizard does a brilliant job of juggling humor and hurt in this fic. A surprisingly plausible and very engaging crossover.

So I totally lied when I said I was done for the day. Enjoy!

Title: Miss de Bourgh in Bath by SwordSwallower17
Fandom: Pride and Prejudice
Pairing: Anne de Bourgh/OMC
Categories: romance, drama
Length: 125,000 words
Warnings: n/a

After Lady Catherine's planned marriage between Darcy and her daughter falls apart, she takes Anne to Bath in search of a prospective husband. Out in the world for the first time, Anne finds that there's a lot out there to see and to love.

I never thought of seeking out fic about Anne de Bourgh; honestly, she wasn't the most interesting of Austen's secondary female characters and I don't think she actually said a word during the course of the book. That said, I love stories about minor Austen characters and wanted to take a break from the endless variations on the Elizabeth/Darcy theme so I gave this fic a try. And wow, am I glad I did.

Sheltered to the point of reclusiveness while at the same time raised with a highly elevated view of herself and her class, Anne is an intriguingly complex character and SwordSwallower does a brilliant job of delving deep into her psyche. Anne's growth from a snobby but uncertain wallflower parroting her mother's beliefs into a thinking, interesting woman capable of interacting with the world around her is a slow and fascinating process and just by itself is enough to warrant this rec.

Of course, Austen fic wouldn't be Austen fic without romance and this fic delivers in that regard as well. SwordSwallower does a tremendous job both with all of her OCs and while I really like Anne's love interest, I love his family even more. With miscommunication and high drama, but also with a firm foundation of friendship and family, it's a realistic and satisfying romance.

(As a side note, can I just state how happy I was to see a fic where Colonel Fitzwilliam is *not* the male love interest? As one of the very few Austen bachelors who doesn't turn out to be a villain, I think he's been married off to every single second-string Austen female.  Multiple times. He's a nice guy and all, but really, I think he deserves a break.)

With a writing style very reminiscent of Jane Austen's; a layered, complex leading lady; and an elaborately researched world fully populated with interesting OCs, Miss de Bourgh in Bath is a long, engaging, and very satisfying story.

Fandom: Alice (2009)
Pairing: Alice/Hatter
Categories: fluff, established relationship
Length: 3,354 words

Remember how subdued Hatter's hair and clothes were in the last scene of the mini-series? Alice noticed, too.

This slice-of-life fic is a lovely coda to the mini-series as Alice tries to figure out why Hatter's hair is suddenly so flat and his clothes suddenly so pedestrian. Sweet and very fluffy.
