Length: ~45,000 words
Warnings: Distractingly improbable flexibility and mobility in Castiel's wings

Review:
In a fused universe where the Winchesters are hunting monsters while the Registration debate rages on in Washington, Sam and Dean stumble on a very big, very green, and very angry Hulk. Also, Castiel. (And then Tony Stark comes to play and things get *really* out of hand.)

The first half of this fic is one of my favorite of all time. I adore team-building stories and trust-building stories and hurt/comfort stories, and this is all three of them at the same time, which makes me one ridiculously happy reccer. The Marvel universe characters are especially well done, with Stark, Coulson, Bruce and the Hulk all fantastically well-drawn and beautifully in character. The second half is more about action and saving the world, which is less my cup of tea, but it's still well-written, fast-paced, and engaging, with a spectacular finale.

If you're in the mood for a highly entertaining team-building story with a chaser of action and world-saving, give this fic a try.

Review:
The continuing mis-adventures of SG-22, which is comprised of Evan Lorne (forcibly ejected from Atlantis by its original owners), Neill Jackson (smart-ass clone), and the Winchester brothers (semi-press-ganged civilians).

I'm a sucker for stories that buck fandom trends, which makes this the perfect Supernatural story for for me. Unlike every other long Supernatural story I've ever tried this fic is light and funny and just plain old fun to read. While the story does get a bit serious at times, the overall feel is one of a romp through the galaxy, leaving a string of demolished (uninhabited) worlds in its wake (thanks, Dean!) As a bonus, you also get a couple of surprise cameos.

On the Stargate side of things, I absolutely adore fics that heavily feature Jack's clone and this is one of the best. Neill Jackson is snarky, sly, and very intelligent and he gets on with the Winchester brothers beautifully, whether he's sharing his glee for blowing shit up with Dean or playing gay with Sam.

Though that does bring me to one quibble: the whole Sam/Neill thing goes nowhere, which is disappointing (and, honestly, inexplicable) considering how much that was built up throughout the fic. At first I thought that was something that would be addressed in the sequel (when I realized this was part of a series), but it turns out the other 15 stories in the series all feature Sheppard and Mitchell (?) and appear to have nothing whatsoever to do with this fic. Here they are if you're interested (no promises on quality - I haven't read them).

Still, flopping romances aside, this is a great read, especially if you're in the mood for something funny, light, and exciting.

Title: The Fast and the NBTs series by Jedi Buttercup
Fandom: The Fast and the Furious/Transformers (Bay 'verse)
Pairing: Brian/Dom
Categories: crossover, drama
Length: 22,000 words (so far)
Warnings: n/a

Review:
For reasons that don't really matter (and which, to be honest, I didn't really understand), Brian was in Mission City when Sam released that pulse of Allspark. Which means that, given enough time and motivation, he can fulfill the ultimate dream of car geeks everywhere: he can create his own Transformers.

A few notes up front: first, this series is apparently still in progress, though each story stands on its own. Second, unfortunately every story in the series thus far has had a bizarrely rushed and abrupt ending. Third, there's a lot of references to the movies of both franchises and if you haven't seen the movies (or if, like me, they went right out of your mind the moment you left the theater) you might be a bit confused.

Normally I wouldn't rec a fic with this many caveats, but this is one of those rare cases where the premise is good enough to carry a story (or a series of stories) despite the fics' flaws. Brian's transforming talent is positively inspired and the Transformer OCs he creates are both adorable and wonderfully unique personalities. Honestly, I'm reccing the story for them, because they're likable enough that even with the rushed endings and the random movie exposition, I wanted more stories so I could see more of the various Transformers Brian has created. Mix in solid characterizations for Mia and Dom, some cute Rome family connections, and cameos from nearly every other Fast and Furious secondary character and you have a fun, light, entertaining set of stories.

Title: Stay by Ferd
Musical Artist: Shakespeare's Sister
Fandom: Batman Universe/Smallville
Pairing: Bruce Wayne/Lois Lane
Categories: fanvid, crossover, angst, favorite

Review:
Bruce and Lois have the perfect relationship, until Selina Kyle steps in and tries to take Lois out.

First I should note that this is quite likely the only vid I'll ever rec at this comm; after several attempts to get into the genre, I've concluded that fanvids are just not for me. That said, Stay has haunted me since the day I first watched it and is the only vid I've ever had in my rereadwatch folder.

So what makes Stay so special? Simply put, it tells a story. From Bruce and Lois's romance, to the conflict with Selina, to the clash between Lois and Selina, to the final battle between Bruce and Selina, this is a fully fleshed tale told in just over four minutes. Mix in the fact that Ferd managed to convincingly edit together three actors who never shared a screen, some positively inspired editing choices that blend the story seamlessly into the song, as well as the brilliant choice of song in the first place and you have a beautiful, classic fanvid.

Unfortunately the download version is no longer available, but it can still be found on YouTube.

Note

NOTE: this vid appears to be one of a whole universe of fanvids. However, as they are currently only available on YouTube and as several of them are only available if you have a YouTube account, I'm not reccing or linking to the rest. I should also note that the vids (including Stay) frequently draw from a very small number of clips; the resulting repetition can detract from your enjoyment of individual vids if you choose to watch more than one.
Title: The Magic of Deduction by TheShoelessOne
Fandom: Sherlock BBC (with a dash of canonical Harry Potter characters)
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Categories: angst, drama, friendship, suspense, crossover (sort of)
Length: 65,000 words
Warnings: n/a

Review:
In a world where John and Sherlock are wizards, there is still a Moriarty and the Game is still on. AKA John and Sherlock Do Hogwarts.

First, I want to note that this fic is tough to categorize, because while it's technically a crossover with the Harry Potter universe, the only Harry Potter characters to make an appearance are the teachers (and they get dramatically less face time than in the books). Thus I'm calling this a fusion with cameos.

Second, I want to announce that, after reading this fic and The Best Revenge, I want more Hufflepuff fic. (Recs welcome.)

Preliminaries out of the way -- this was a great fic! I loved the way that John and Sherlock's relationship developed organically throughout their seven years of school, I loved the large cast of Sherlock characters who were used in unexpected but ultimately perfect ways, I loved Mycroft and Mummy, I loved that Irene and Moran were significant to the plot, and most of all I loved that John is a Hufflepuff, because Hufflepuffs rock.

There are a couple of issues in the fic: you know going in that Moriarty is the bad guy (hence the 'suspense' tag rather than the 'casefile' one) and the POV does drift a bit in places. Still, those are very minor quibbles with a fic that not only has a great plot and great characters, it also has one of the best friends-to-lovers romances I've ever read. Very entertaining and wonderfully satisfying.

Fandom: Leverage/Angel

Categories: action, casefile (sort of), crossover, drama, family, friendship
Length: 40,000 words

Review:
When Eliot stumbles into a nest of vampires, it's sheer luck that Faith is there to save him. The only problem is, he's now in a coma and Faith (and Angel) thinks that he's Lindsay McDonald. The Leverage crew, on the other hand, have never heard of this 'Lindsay' character (and don't get them started on the subject of 'vampires'). Thus begins one epic tale of friendship and family drama.

I've had a streak of bad luck with fics of late, so I my expectations were low when I opened this story, especially since I'm not a huge fan of Eliot or Angel centric fics. Fortunately for me, this story is a perfect ensemble piece with everyone getting a chance to shine and with plenty of attention paid to team dynamics. Even better is the fact that everyone is beautifully in character, with the two worlds tied together so seamlessly that I had a tough time remembering which bits were canon and which were crossover. Finally, I really appreciated that the crossover is weighted on the Leverage side of things; fans of both shows should be satisfied, but for a Leverage fan a well-written epic is a special treat.

If you like team stories, or tales of found family, or friendship fics, or just plain like a good, well-written crossover you should give this fic a try.

Categories: AU, crossover, action, angst, drama, crossover
Length: 25,000 words

Review:
In an AU crossover world where demons have been replaced by supervillains, Sam's psychic visions are flagged as a superpower. And where do people with superpowers go to school? Sky High, of course!

This is a very clever crossover, one that manages to keep Sam, Dean, and John perfectly in character while transporting them to the world of Sky High. Along for the ride is the Sky High crew, who are all a little more fleshed out than they were in canon (especially Warren's mom, who is awesome) and whose interactions with Sam are fascinating. Mix in some original (and very intriguing) superpower politics, daddy issues left right and center, and loads of very entertaining "Save the Citizen" competitions and you have a fun, albeit a bit angsty (John Winchester and Baron Battle: world's worst dads), fic.

Note: this is a complete story, but it's part of a series that appears to have been abandoned. Thus while most of the internal plotlines are tied up, the ending is a bit open.

Fandom: Good Omens/Dresden Files
Pairing: Harry/Marcone pre-slash
Categories: humor, hurt/comfort, crossover
Length: 17,900 words
Warnings: one random and rather frustrating POV shift

Review:
Apparently Harry Dresden has been designated Heaven's new champion and Hell has sent their most experienced Earth-bound demon to take care of him. Sucks to be Crowley.

Poor, poor Crowley. Seriously, I've rarely seen a character take as much of a beating in a funny fic as Crowley does in his quest to take down Harry Dresden. From the disastrous attempts to create havoc via Molly and Thomas to the epic direct attack on Harry himself, Crowley finds himself in a world of hurt and I spent much of this fic wanting to give him a hug. While laughing the whole time, because shiplizard does a brilliant job of juggling humor and hurt in this fic. A surprisingly plausible and very engaging crossover.
